New wave in Finnish fashion

A new mindset has brought into being a new bold wave of Finnish fashion designers & doers. With a heritage in design and architecture, fashion is just about to set out a whole new industry. Innovative ideas, ecological values as a base and ambitious level in design and quality have been acknowledged internationally by several instances — i. e by Hyères Fashion Festival and Vogue Talents. As a country of no fashion tradition, as well as the location between east and west and the rich cultural influences of both Scandinavian and Slavic aesthetics set forth strong universes. ONAR, founded by designer Irene Kostas in 2014, is one of the most rapidly internationalized fashion labels.

Irene Kostas (b. 1985) is a designer of Finnish and Greek origin. She has inherited her love for natural materials and craftsmanship from her artisan father. She grew up in a family of craftsmen with a century long leather workmanship heritage, thus she grew up to appreciate natural materials and artistry since a very young age. Unlikely matches are a definitive part of her identity and life and that trickles through to her design process. In the collections soft materials meet sleek geometric forms, richness of texture meets minimalism, the organic materials are exposed in acid colourscapes and urban phenomena are embraced and juxtaposed with nomadic roots. Music is a part of the design process, as Irene is performing as a radio host and dj too. Her sets are otherworldy with a strong sense of the unexpected. Her dj career dates back to 2012, when she created a club music concept called ONAR, later to carry the name of the label. The ONAR collections have been featured in internationally acclaimed magazines such as Vogue UK, i-D, The New York Times, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. Currently, ONAR collections are available in selected stores in 12 countries.
