‘PHOTOBIENNALE 2018’
BARBARA DAVIDSON
MOMENTS
All the photographs in the Moments collection were made using the Volvo City Safety standard proprietary security camera installed in the new Volvo XC60. The entire collection was first shown in July last year in the Canvas Studios gallery in London. The exhibition then travelled to other European cities finally to arrive in the Russian capital.
The photographs were taken in the first half of 2017, the exhibition features thirty images which were taken on the streets of Copenhagen. The shots show us moments of everyday life in the Danish capital, captured from a completely new point of view.
‘The Moments series shows us the ordinary life of a big city, something we can witness either in Moscow, St. Petersburg, or any other Russian city. We are shown a rich urban landscape: people, bicycles, cars — constant activity, both day and night. We see what a complex and ambiguous environment the modern city dweller inhabits, — says Anton Svekolnikov, director of corporate communications and events at Volvo Car Russia. — Equipped with cameras, sensors and modern security systems, Volvo Cars make this environment safer for everyone who uses the city. Through the Moments project we have combined art and security to bring awareness and recognition to the advantages of Volvo Technology, which constantly watches the situation on the road’.
The creator of all the works in the Moments project — world-renowned photographer Barbara Davidson, is a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, one of the most prestigious US awards in the fields of literature, journalism, music and theatre. Also, along with a team of colleagues, in 2011 Barbara Davidson received the prestigious Emmy award from the American Television Academy.
For Barbara Davidson a collaboration with Volvo Cars — is more than just a technically interesting project. ‘I have a very personal relationship with Volvo, — says the photographer. — When I was a teenager, I was in a serious car accident, our car rolled over, and if I had been in any other car, I would have most probably died. After the accident I was told — I survived only thanks to Volvo’.
‘Art and technology — the Moments project was born at the intersection of these two fields. Of course, since its birth photography always existed at the intersection of visual art and pioneering technology. But still, a series of first-class works, which Barbara Davidson took through the use of car cameras... this is something new. And I’m glad that, thanks to our collaboration with Volvo, everyone who wishes can come to see this unique exhibition in Moscow’, — says Olga Sviblova, director of the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow and organiser of the Photobiennale.
