Twenty years have passed since the daily English newspaper The Moscow Times first came out in Moscow. This small but influential publication with a circulation of 35,000 copies and a staff of 110 people is unique in more ways than one. It is a Russian newspaper founded by a Dutch company, and it publishes articles that meet the standards of American journalism. Moreover, it is created by an international editorial staff, all of whom are united by two things: a love for their profession and a love for Russia.

The newspaper’s journalists have witnessed many historic and dramatic events in modern times. It’s the lives of people they’ve crossed paths with, with all their great diversity, that are truly beyond description. This book is not an attempt to reflect the Russia of the last 20 years. It does not claim to be all-encompassing and thorough. It simply offers impressions of people and events captured by the photographers of The Moscow Times over the last 20 years.
