vOn December 11, Andrey Makarevich celebrated his 65th birthday. He has been painting for as long as he can remember. He has been creating graphic works for almost half a century. And he has been exhibiting for almost thirty years.

Andrey Makarevich’s first exhibition as an artist was held in 1989, and since then he has participated in about hundred art projects. In Russia, Makarevich has shown his works in small collections and at the country’s largest museums, including the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. His exhibitions were held not only in Russia, but also in Western Europe and the USA.

Makarevich’s interests as an artist include painting, engraving, book illustration, and mixed media works. Another unusual aspect in his art comprised a series of works completed as a duo, whereby two artists would work on a single canvas (he completed joint projects of this kind with Andrey Belle and Alexander Galitsky). The leader of the group Mashina Vremeni clearly brought this skill from music, particularly from jazz, which he has been playing for almost twenty years and which is almost unimaginable without an instantaneous exchange of ideas.

Now, on Makarevich’s birthday, the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow is opening an anniversary exhibition, ‘...a sound is heard: they are singing’. The title is a quotation from a poem by Makarevich. This project is not a retrospective ‘creative report’: Makarevich is not interested in nostalgia or past achievements, he has always taken far more interest in what is happening in the here and now. At MAMM, you will see the Makarevich of today: almost 50 works, made on boards, and book illustrations.

Co-workers for the exhibition: Anna Zaitseva, Vladimir Rostov, Daria Krivtsova, Tobin Auber, Pavel Budberg, Sergey Bunin, Mikhail Gurevich, Alexey Gureev, Arthur Dyagilev, Victor Zobnin, Kirill Kosenko, Alexey Kulakov, Peter Kulakov, Yuri Nalbandyan, Alexander Pavlovsky, Vadim Peganov, Alexander Chentsov.

I really love fish. For the fact that they are perfect. For the fact that they are silent. To their beauty nothing to add. They are a thousand times older than us — and no arrogance, mind you! I can watch them for hours. And when they take me to their company — I’m just happy!
